Get started with price notifications

Here’s how to set up your price notifications, so you can be prepared for when wholesale electricity prices spike.

Get up-to-date info for up-to-date energy choices

When energy prices rise unexpectedly, we can let you know.

All you need to do is login to the Flow Power app, head to Settings (or the person icon) and choose to turn price notifications on.

You can choose to get price alerts by SMS, and/or push notification and select your preferred price threshold.

Want to change things up? Simply head back to the Settings section to change your notification price threshold or notification type.

Note: to enable Custom Price Notifications, you’ll need to be on the latest version of the Flow Power app (v19.0). We’d recommend uninstalling and reinstalling your app if you’re unsure.

Custom Price Notifications

Custom Price Notifications allows you to select a threshold for when you receive wholesale electricity price alerts. (They’re optional, but we recommend enabling them.)

You can choose to be alerted when electricity prices rise above:

.50c/kWh (occasional, but a good time to power down if you can)
$1/kWh (not often, but a GOOD time to power down if you can)

Try these if you’re: very flexible with your energy use and very keen to keep your electricity costs low. We’d suggest powering down small non-essentials like entertainment units or chargers when you receive this alert. 

$5/kWh (rare, but a GREAT time to power down if you can)

Try this if you’re: keen to keep your electricity costs low and have major appliances you can easily switch on or off.  If it’s safe to do, we’d suggest switching off major appliances like heating or cooling systems, or pool pumps when you receive this alert. 

We’ll send you Custom Price Notifications every five minutes when wholesale prices rise above your threshold When you receive these, you could consider safely switching off non-essentials, like entertainment units, EV chargers, dishwashers, washing machines or heating or cooling systems.

Top tip: Make sure notifications are allowed from the Flow Power app in your phone settings. We recommend you turn on app notifications.

Priority Price Notifications

We’ll automatically alert you when a high price event is forecast with Priority Price Notifications.

These standard SMS notifications will help you plan your electricity use around these periods, to improve your monthly bill outcomes.

Priority Price Notifications are sent when the wholesale electricity price is forecasted to be extremely high ($10/kWh), and may only happen a few times a year.

If you can reduce your electricity usage when you receive a Priority Price Notification, it will assist in helping you minimise the impact on your Price Efficiency Adjustment (PEA) and your overall electricity cost for the billing period.

Priority Price Notifications are a feature of the Flow Power product, which means you are unable to opt out.

While Flow Power will always endeavour to provide the best service possible, please note: 

  • There may be instances where we will not provide notification (e.g. because the relevant market event was not forecast or there was insufficient time between the publication of the forecast event and an increase in market pricing).
  • Flow Power is not liable in respect of differences between the forecast event pricing published by AEMO and the actual market price.

  • There is a range of factors that may impact our ability to provide, or your ability to receive, our notification service – including (but not limited to) timely publication of relevant forecast data and the availability of third-party communications networks.
