In the heart of Wagga Wagga’s special activations precinct, lies Spark Renewables’ Bomen Solar Farm.
Supported by one of Australia’s largest community benefit funds, Bomen Solar Farm has innovated a blend of agrisolar and community projects.
During construction, it provided jobs for 150 local workers, including 38 Indigenous workers and 18 women – promoting both employment and gender diversity in the solar industry.
Bomen is one of the first solar farms in Australia to share its land with beekeepers, as part of an initiative that focuses on improving the mutual productivity of agricultural land and renewable energy projects.
Its five beehives belong to local Wagga Wagga beekeepers, Queen & Honey, harvesting one-of-a-kind solar honey!
The Bomen Solar Farm is also home to a pack of over 300 Merino wethers and non-breeding ewes – an unusual sight on a solar farm, for sure.
Their presence on the land is currently being studied by the Charles Sturt University and Spark Renewables, to determine how sheep-grazing can be productively introduced to other solar farms.
The Bomen Solar Farm community fund provides long-term funding to Wagga Wagga City Council and other Eunony Valley landowners in revegetating 58 hectares of local land with 51,000 native plants – including eucalyptus and acacia.
To improve the educational and employment outcomes of Wagga Wagga’s youth, the Bomen Solar Farm community farm fund provides long-term funding to local high school Mount Austin:
The Transition Program: helping year 12 students transition from high school into the next stage of their lives.
Girls @ the Centre Program: Helping high school aged girls develop skills to flourish later in life.
Firefighters are a critical resource in any Australian city. That’s why the Bomen Solar Farm Community Fund has committed to funding the good work of Wagga Wagga’s local volunteer firefighters, in the Eunony Bushfire Brigade.
The funding has so far allowed the Brigade to expand their vehicle storage facilities, and currently supports their ongoing operational expenses.
Abbeyfield Kooringal provides secure and affordable housing for people with an intellectual disability in Wagga Wagga. The Bomen Solar Farm Community Fund has donated $10k in solar installations, resulting in more affordable electricity for residents and earnings from excess solar generation.
Switching to 100% GreenPower can help Australia transition to a more renewable grid, and reduce your own carbon footprint.
